Neighborhood Banners
Newport, Kentucky
1 color on vinyl
The concept was to create a system to identify the different neighborhoods of Newport, Kentucky. Traditionally, much of Newport had a bad reputation, which the city is continually moving away from. Rather than trying to hide or forget this reputation, which gives Newport much of its personality, this system embraces and pokes fun at many of the stereotypes. The system uses many of the locally accepted, but unofficial, names for the neighborhoods, and a hat to represent the people associated with that neighborhood. Mansion Hill, for instance, has always been home to the rich of Newport, and is represented by the top hat. Monmouth Street has been home to clubs and casinos through the years, which is represented by a showgirl’s headdress. Spaghetti Knob, where the Mafia who once controlled Newport lived, is represented by the kind of hat a gangster would wear.
